Many, many insects disturbed yesterday’s dinner. So I thought it’s time I went to bed early. When I got up in the morning and had a cup of coffee on the veranda I saw lots of shiny reflections on the ground just where the lightning conductor stands. When I took a closer look I realized that this glimmering stuff were insects wings, most probably termite wings. After I had enjoyed my morning coffee I went to continue my work on the greenhouses that were damaged by a rain storm. On the way I could see termites laying all over the beds and the brand new tarpaulins were also covered with them.
Later when Charles and I were at work, Barbara, our cook, would come to collect the termites. I asked her what she was doing. So she explained that some local people would eat termites and she wanted to roast them to bring them to the kids of her relatives that she was going to visit next week-end. So I helped her shake off some more termites from the tarpaulins and continued my work. Later when I went to the veranda to have lunch I observed Barbara roasting the insects. I then walked to the pan and sniffed on the roasting insects. It smelled a bit burnt but other than that I didn’t perceive any bad odour. She then put them on a tray, salted them and later packed them in a paper bag. Food from heaven, ready to be brought to the kids…
Uhm, what’s that, laying on the ground next to the lightning conductor?
looks like wings to me…
even the beds were covered with them
a closer looks even reveals some of the termites… who mostly died already…
even the tarpaulins were covered with the dead insects…
they came to die…
Barbara would collect the termites…
…and roast them
Add some salt and voilà! Enjoy your meal! (I didn’t try them…)
Haha, why didnt you try them?
ReplyDeleteThis delicious food was supposed to be given to some kids, so I didn't want to eat that stuff away from them. ;-)
DeleteNo, to be honest, it just smelled like burned hoof, so I didn't feel like I wanted to taste it...
